The Peoples Park in Limerick is located in the heart of the city close to the city’s main train station & bus terminal. The park was originally built to be part of a housing development back in Georgian times & was planned to be key holders only park which means only people who lived in the development could live in the park. However, the development was never finished & in 1877 it was given to the people of Limerick & is now accessible to all.
The park features a children’s playground which is suitable for children of up to 10 years of age, 1 of Ireland’s 2 only ornate drinking fountains & a beautiful bandstand. There are also two shelters located in the park for you to escape from rain showers & in the middle of the park stands an imposing limestone column dedicated to Thomas Spring Rice, a famous MP from Limerick. For those with green fingers the park boasts a large selection of trees including Beech, Oak, Ash, Lime, Maple & Walnut making it perfect for a nature walk with your little ones. During the summer the park features an impressive display of blooms & in the autumn the park is carpeted with golden, rust tones from all of the fallen leaves.
Other activities close by includes Limerick City Gallery of Art which is located just north of the park
