Located in the original airport terminal building, in the heart of a small village called Foynes is the Foynes Flying Boat and Maritime Museum. This award winning museum captures the story of how Foynes was one of the most important aviation stations in the world from 1937 to 1945.
During this nostalgic era, Military personnel, celebrities and refugees were flown on the famous flying boats and were frequent visitors to the area. In 2013 the museum was extended to include a Maritime Museum with information on the Shannon Estuary from this time.
These stories are told through an extensive range of exhibits and a 1940’s style cinema and graphic illustrations feature throughout the original Terminal building. View the transmitters, receivers and Morse code equipment. Take your chance to board a life size replica of the Yankee Clipper Flying Boat and revisit the night the Irish coffee was invented in the airport restaurant.
Learn about life on the River Shannon at the unique Maritime museum showing the commercial and leisure aspects of the estuary and revisiting many of the myth and stories tied to this historical river.
